Picture taken on the Tail of the Dragon by 129slayer.com.

The hi-viz weenie on the bagger ST1300 (thanks for the correction!) crossed the center line.

Kinja'd!!!

He target-fixated, panicked, and straightened up.

Kinja'd!!!

This went badly for him.

Everyone involved survived the wreck.

129 isn’t a road to take lightly, a lot of those turns are blind and decreasing radius. Target fixation is a real thing kids. Keep the shiny side up

Feel bad for the two on the Harley. I’m glad to hear they survived, hopefully with minimal injuries.

havin ridden one i can tell you they are very good in the corners, that was caused by speed and a lack of skill/experience.

if you are on a road like that on a bike like that you slow the hell down. he has now learned that the hard way.

I would say it’s skill. I have a friend that can corner his Harley Night Train harder than I can with my 250 Ninja. And then there’s this guy with his Hayabusa at a gymkhana.

If you know what you’re doing you can make fat bikes dance.

That dude crossing the line is riding my bike, and he’s doing it all wrong. He should be kissing his right mirror. His body is on the wrong side of the bike. He came into that turn way too hot, and didn’t setup for it at all. Squid.

The same bike that crossed the line, ridden by someone who has an idea what they’re doing.

The exhaust is going to be first (unless under a real hard brake maybe), but he’s got plenty of angle left in the earliest shot. Also, sitting up so high is doing him no favors.

Secret cornering technique: lean the opposite direction your bike is going.

Kinja'd!!! CRider > Invinciblejets
07/19/2016 at 16:16

Kinja'd!!!0

No, it’s the rider. The bike is perfectly capable of turning, stopping and leaning over, three things most bagger riders are afraid to do. That’s why they take baggers to the Dragon.

I’d say it was target fixation; he was looking at the double yellow line, trying to stay inside it. Instead, going where he was looking, went right at it.

I did the same thing my first time out on the road on two wheels. Luckily my riding mentor had chosen to take me out on a very lightly traveled road. That was a lesson I learned really fast.

it takes a lot of practice. a hell of a lot for someone like me, I haven’t quite got it down yet. I need working the friction zone to become muscle memory; right now I spend too much effort thinking about each individual action (clutch, throttle, rear brake, head position) and I eventually let one of them get away from me.

Kinja'd!!!0

nah, skill is totally a big part of it. any bike can go around those curves, you just have to have the skill to know what speed to take them and how much lean you have. And if you’re not experienced riding through those kinds of curves, you may think you have less lean angle than you have. as I’m still getting used to it, even the piddly 30° or so I have on my Dyna feels like I’m on the verge of being horizontal.

The moron who crossed the center line is 100% at fault and I hope he gets hit with whatever civil and/or criminal charges that come his way.

But those people who got hit - though not their fault - are pretty stupid for their complete lack of safety equipment beyond the rather useless open helmets. They’re extremely fortunate to not receive even worse injuries then they did.

Kinja'd!!! Tohru > spanfucker retire bitch

Riding a motorcycle is an assumption of risk, and an expression of freedom. They have the right to not wear safety equipment if they don’t want to.

There’s times I ride in full leathers and full-face helmet, and there’s times I ride in sunglasses, t-shirt, and jeans.

They’ve got helmets and at least partial leathers.

my justification for not using all safety equipment all the time is that I’m an organ donor, so I’m going into it knowing it might kill me and I’m okay with that. “Life free or die”

That’s actually floorboard, rear bag guards, and/or front engine guard scraping. Pipes can’t hit the ground on a Touring Harley.

Ask me how I know. :(

Fully respect one’s rights. No issue.

But how come it’s 0% of someone’s business to suggest / advocate what safety equipment a motorcycle rider “must wear”....

Yet 100% of their financial responsibility (via higher insurance premium(s) / expense(s) ) to cover the increases in medical costs associated with closed head injuries and related physical damage for not wearing said protective gear?

IMHO, if someone knows the risks and beats the the odds, then they should uniquely enjoy the reward of the “freedom” from said risks. But they should also be prepared to be fully responsible / accountable for the consequences of those risks becoming reality in their life....not someone else.
